“I have been teaching in Leicester City for the last eleven years. During this time, I have taught in two contrasting secondary schools and undertaken several different roles within a school’s middle management and senior management structures, culminating in my last role of Vice Principal, which I did for four years in which time I also passed the National Professional Qualification for Headteachers.
Throughout this time, I have often questioned the quality of supply teachers that were sent to cover absent staff. Indeed, good supply teachers are rare. What I mean by good, is someone who turns up early and isn’t the first to leave. Someone who works with the department they have been placed in and really tries to ensure that the learning in the classroom and the progress made by all students is unaffected.
These rare supply teachers also have the demeanour of a professional educator and not simply a supervisor/baby sitter, someone who leaves the students in no doubt that yes, they are a proper teacher and that also they are all going to learn.
